The accreditation of colleges of education is a relatively new process. The National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) has been in existence only since 1954. As of 2004, approximately one half of the colleges of education in the United States (575 of the approximately 1,200) were NCATE accredited. However, the number of colleges of education seeking NCATE accreditation has tripled in the past 5 years. The accreditation of departments of educational leadership is even more recent and sporadic. NCATE's accreditation applies to colleges of education as an entire unit, not to individual programs within those units. As recently as the 1990s, the national Policy Board of Educational Administration (NPBEA) approved a specialty professional association (SPA) to conduct accreditation of departments of educational administration in colleges of education, but only as part of the NCATE review.
