Gertie Marx was a German-born American physician, known as the mother of obstetric anesthesia for her contribution to developing obstetric anesthesiology as a specialty. She pioneered the use of epidural injections to ease women's pain during childbirth. She invented an epidural needle that was named after her, and she founded and edited the journal Obstetric Anesthesia Digest .
