Chapter 9: Sexual Orientation-Related Measures

Sexual orientation-related measures The focus of this chapter is to present measures that purport to address matters related to sexual orientation. Given the number of terms used in research and lay discussion, an overview of terminology used in this field of study is needed. Through Herek, Kimmel, Amaro, and Melton (1991), the Committee on Lesbian and Gay Concerns of the American Psychological Association (APA) provided clarity and caution with respect to the terms used for gay men, lesbian individuals, and bisexual men and women. In the report, the APA suggested that because of the fluidity of language and the shifts inherent in the sociopolitical milieu, terms may fall in or out of favor.
