From bioterrorism to predictive medicine: New applications of salivary diagnostics Salivary diagnostics are expanding into a broad range of new applications. Two major drivers fuel this growth: the advantages of this testing modality compared with traditional blood- and urine-based tools (such as their noninvasive nature, convenience, cost-efficiency, and the fact that they do not require specially trained medical personnel) and the emergence of new markets for which rapid results or inexpensive technologies are essential (such as therapeutic monitoring and predictive medicine). This chapter will further explain the role of salivary diagnostics in emerging markets such as bioterrorism, drug monitoring (for both therapeutic drugs and drugs of abuse), and common endocrine conditions.
