Indigenous Treatments: Sobadores
A sobador is a traditional folk healer, masseuse, and therapist in Latino culture who treats common ailments such as constipation and diarrhea, as well as culture-bound syndromes such as empacho (a blockage of the stomach or digestive tract) and other digestive disorders by using therapeutic touch to relieve physical pain and by massaging the stomach and lower back to release blockages. The patient is counseled about proper diet and herbal remedies that will aid digestion. When treating emotional conditions such as bilis (over-reactive bile) or nervios (nervous breakdown or mental crisis), a sobador draws from important ethnobotanical and psychotherapeutic knowledge and ancient healing wisdom to effectively and comprehensively treat patients.
