Founded in 1883 by George S. Parker (whose brothers Charles and Edward joined in later years), Parker Brothers, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Hasbro, is one of the world's largest producers of board games. The company's mandate was unusual for the United States in the 19th century: Parker and his brothers believed the primary purpose of games is that they should be fun, not educational. The company's first game, Banking, reflected the interests of an era consumed with politicking over bimetallism and lionizing the extravagant successes of the Industrial Revolution's tycoons.
