The toy horse has been part of a child's toy box for several thousand years. The construction and style have developed to reflect the use of horses in society. It provided an opportunity for children to imitate adults and their use of the horse from jousting to riding into battle. King James I wrote to his young son, later Charles I, saying: “The honourablest and most commendable games that ye can use are games on horseback.” Children have played on rocking horses for centuries.
