Miniatures Wargaming, that is, fighting battles with painted lead soldiers, is a very old and popular pastime. Rules for these games have been in existence for many years as well, perhaps the most famous being those written by H.G. Wells near the turn of the 20th century. In the 1960s, however, an organization named wargames Research Group (WRG) made changes that profoundly affected the hobby. WRG began in 1969 when two individuals, Phil Barker and Bob O'Brien, developed new rules for Wargaming using ancient period armies for a convention held in Britain. Their innovative rules were so well received that they were published shortly after under the title Ancient Rules .
