TERATOMAS ARE BENIGN tumors that are formed in the ovaries or testicles, and also in other sites of an infant. Teratomas derive from oocytes that activate parthenogenetically, begin development, and grow into a disorganized mass of tissue. Similar tumors are found in the testicles and are often more malignant. One type of testicular tumor is known as germ cell tumor (GCT); this type of tumor accounts for almost all kinds of testicular cancers. GCTs are commonly found in embryos or young men who just completed puberty. Embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells are derived from GCT. EC cells are a small population of GCT, found among the disorganized array of somatic and extraembryonic cells in a tumor. Isolated EC cells give rise to teratocarcinomas upon reinjection into mouse models, indicating their pluripotent properties.
