Overview: Women in the arts This chapter aims to introduce some selected influential women artists and outline some essential ideas related to women's creativity in modern and contemporary art history. Women artists suffered considerable professional isolation and were virtually excluded from art history in the prefeminist and early feminist periods, that is, up until the early 1970s. Nevertheless, in this section some exceptionally well-known women artists are introduced, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Meret Oppenheim, and Barbara Hepworth, who do have a place in the canon. In the section on fabric art and embroidery, the importance of fabric art is demonstrated, which is often seen simply as women's handiwork, and the argument is made as to how it is transformed from craft to fine art and how the division between low art and high art is diluted.
