College athletics has provided millions of students with opportunities not only to compete in athletics but also to achieve an education and ultimately a college degree. College sports have evolved into a profitable industry that has combined the pursuit of athletic excellence with the academic mission of institutions of higher learning. African American athletes have made significant contributions in elevating college athletics to a profitable commercial entity. College athletics continue to offer the student body an avenue to unite and share in a common tradition and sociocultural practice while giving athletes the opportunity to use their talents in exchange for an athletic scholarship (especially at the National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] Division I and II levels).
