Sports in high school affect not only the students who play but also the lives of the school and of the greater community. There are many advantages to playing sports in high school, including staying in shape, forging relationships, and learning skills. Participating in sports can also have its disadvantages, such as physical injuries and undue pressure. Coaches play a major role in high school sports experiences and can make a difference in whether playing on a team is a positive experience. Many students benefit from the experience, but it is not for everyone. Sports have become an increasingly large part of the high school experience. In the 2002 to 2003 school year, more than 40% of all high school students participated in at least one high school sport (National Federation of State High School Associations, 2003).
