Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study

The Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) Study is an epidemiological study of risk factors for atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart attack and/or stroke), ischemic heart disease, related disorders (e.g., hypertension), and death in middle-aged and older adults from Kuopio, Finland, and surrounding communities. More than two decades ago, this area in eastern Finland was found to have one of the highest rates of heart disease among men in the world. The KIHD Study was designed to examine both traditional risk factors (e.g., cholesterol and blood pressure levels) and unknown or suspected risk factors (e.g., psychological characteristics) for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), in part to attempt to understand the high rates of heart disease in eastern Finland.
