This entry provides a brief explanation of the three levels of preventive intervention, followed by an overview of the prevalence and prevention efforts for four major categories of violence in the United States: youth violence, suicide, child maltreatment, and intimate partner and sexual violence. Although space limits the breadth and depth of scope for this extensive topic, it is hoped that the reader will pursue more extensive readings on each of these and other violence-related topics as well as the many violence prevention efforts too numerous to mention.
