Edward Deci and Richard Ryan are professors in the Department of Clinical and Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of Rochester. Their extremely productive 30-year collaboration has led to the development and continuing evolution of self-determination theory (SDT). Deci received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1970, and Ryan received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1981. Their work has been focused on the effects of social contexts on motivation, particularly factors that enhance or undermine self-determination and intrinsic motivation. Together and with other collaborators, Deci and Ryan have isolated basic social cognitive processes underlying motivation. Applications of SDT have been tested in many areas dealing with parenting, sport and exercise, work, leisure, health care, mental health, education, and psychotherapy.
