An English naturalist whose revolutionary theory laid the foundation for both the modern theory of evolution and the principle of natural selection, Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He was the fifth child and second son of Robert Waring Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. Darwin believed that all the life on earth evolved over millions of years from a few common ancestors. From 1831 to 1836, Darwin served as a naturalist on board the HMS Beagle on a science expedition around the world.
