The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) is a national voluntary association of 800 educator preparation programs within institutions of higher education. The mission of AACTE is to promote the learning of all PreK–12 students through high-quality, evidence-based preparation and continuing education for all school personnel. Member institutions include public and private colleges and universities located in every state, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam, plus affiliate members including state departments of education, community colleges, educational laboratories and centers, and foreign institutions and organizations. There are also 45 state chapters. In the early years of the 20th century, presidents of normal (teacher training) schools in Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin formed the North Central Council of State Normal School Presidents and held meetings as an informal council from 1902 to 1917.
