Health and safety in the workplace are very important. The requirement of compulsory employer's liability insurance since 1969 ensures such safety. However, although UK health and safety law has been long established under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work, etc., Act (HASAWA), it is now influenced more by EU law. Also, what is unique about this area of employment law is that its interaction with both civil and criminal law (in that an employer can be sued for injuries and can be prosecuted) allows an interesting legal enforcement of these important obligations.
