Thinking about the world has long been dominated across a range of academic fields and in popular culture by the idea that history works up to and through the nation-state. The world political map has triumphed over dividing the world up in other ways except insofar as the map itself is subdivided in terms of the nature and characteristics of statehood in different parts of the world. Then, we have such often taken-for-granted regional labels as “developed” and “underdeveloped” worlds, or the three worlds of democratic capitalism, communism, and postcolonial underdevelopment, respectively, that were reflective of the cold war from 1947 to 1989 with each of the units presumably exhibiting distinctive types of statehood.
