The SAGE Handbook of Geographical Knowledge is a critical inquiry into how Geography as a field of knowledge has been produced, re-produced, and re-imagined. It comprises three sections on Geographical Orientations, Geography’s Venues, and Critical Geographical Concepts and Controversies. The first provides an overview of the genealogy of ‘geography.' The second highlights the types of spatial settings and locations in which geographical knowledge has been produced. The third focuses on venues of primary importance in the historical geography of geographical thought.

Introduction
Two major questions relate to the linkages between humans and the environment. The first of these is the degree to which humans have modified the environment by processes such as land cover change, often referred to as the human impact. The second of these is the extent to which human history has been influenced by natural environmental changes. The impact of humans is reviewed and the escalation of the human impact is assessed through time, leading up to the present concern with global change. It is, however, evident that it is not always easy to separate human from natural causes of change.
