Looking across these chapters, we see a range of sophisticated arguments regarding the communicative potential of nonverbal behavior. Because the authors have done a commendable job representing the field, it is neither our intention in this chapter, nor do we feel it desirable, to attempt a general commentary on the chapters in this volume. Rather, we focus attention on a select set of issues important for understanding the field today and for anticipating its future direction.
