Introduction
In March 2003, doctors at a Toronto hospital attended to a patient who had a high fever and was having difficulty breathing. Within days she had died, as had her son. Many others had died or were seriously ill in cities as distant as Hong Kong, Hanoi and Singapore. The cause of their deaths, the SARS-corona virus, is now considered by medical researchers to have been only the most recent of a lengthy series of zoonotic diseases passed from animals to humans (and vice versa).
