This chapter investigates how and why the topic of the public sphere, or publicness more broadly, is important for the ways in which political geography conceptualizes democratic politics. Democracy is a system for making binding, legitimate decisions, one that puts a premium on the principle of ‘rule by the many’. The idea of the public sphere needs to be approached with this understanding of democracy in mind: ‘Democratic theory focuses on accountability and responsiveness in the decision-making process; theories of the public sphere focus on the role of public communication in facilitating or hindering this process’ (Ferree et al., 2002: 289).
