Although destination marketing organizations (DMOs) include various organizational entities, perhaps there are none more dominant than convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) in North America. This type of DMO has a long history, a competitive present and a challenging future. This chapter will briefly review the history to show why they came to exist in the form they now have, what their present situation is, and how the dynamics of the market, technological change, and competitive forces are challenging the relevance of their business model and strategy.
