Among the many existing definitions of resilience, those of Masten (1994) and Richman and Fraser (2001), considered together, may be the clearest and most comprehensive. Masten (1994) defines resilience as “successful adaptation despite risk and adversity” (p. 3). She further states that resilience refers to successful adaptation either (a) in the presence of high risk, (b) despite stressful experiences, or (c) in recovery from trauma. In summarizing several definitions of resilience, Richman and Fraser (2001) note that “resilience requires exposure to significant risk, overcoming risk or adversity, and success that is beyond predicted expectations” (p. 6).
