The notion of trust has in recent years received considerable attention. Trust has even been described as a business imperative (e.g. Davidow and Malone, 1992; Drucker, 1993; Sabel, 1993). In the 1994 summer special issue of the Strategic Management Journal, which focuses upon a search for new paradigms in strategy, Hosmer (1994) argues that trust is essential for success in a competitive global economy.
