The German Vereinigung für Rechtssoziologie (Law and Society Association), founded in 1975 as a nonprofit corporation, aimed to establish an organizational framework for the scientific community of jurists and social scientists who deal with the reality of law and for research and teaching in this field. The Nazi regime suppressed and finally destroyed sociology of law in the 1930s. It forced most of its representatives to emigrate, and the discipline could not recover before the 1960s and early 1970s. The foundation of the Association was therefore proof that both sociolegal theory and empirical legal research were vital again.
