Laos is located in the heart of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia, bordered by China, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The country covers a total of 236,800 square kilometers, 75% of which is mountains and plateaus. The population of the Laos is 5,921,545 people (July 2003 estimate) and is growing at an annual rate of 2.4%. The capital and largest city is Vientiane. The country is divided into 16 provinces.
