Online Counselling and Guidance Skills is the first book to deal with the practicalities of this mode of working. It looks at how practitioners need to adapt their basic counseling skills to the online environment and guides them through the process of setting up, defining and maintaining a working relationship with a client within professional, ethical and legal boundaries. Case studies and extracts from online sessions show how the skills are put into practice, while practical exercises and points for further consideration help readers to develop their own knowledge and skills.
Online Expression
Online Expression
Online counselling skills presented in this chapter:
- Online empathy
- Online feeling expression
- Responding to feelings during computer-mediated interactions
- Disinhibition in online expression
- The use of acronyms and emoticons
Exercises and vignettes are included within this chapter, demonstrating the skills in practice and encouraging thought on the subject matter discussed.
This chapter discusses the skills of online empathy and the aptitudes required to identify and work with feelings which are explicitly expressed, unexpressed, and feelings which are more obscure in an online context. In conjunction with resistance and non-verbal cues, the evidence of such feeling expression will often be ‘hidden’ within the text, or at the opposite standpoint signified by the writer using outbursts of CAPITALS WITH BOLD TEXT and the use of exclamation marks !!!!!
