The casino card game Baccarat has its origins in late Medieval Italy. Legend has it that it was invented by an Italian gambler named Felix Falguierein, who used a deck of Tarot cards and claimed that the game was based on an Etruscan mythical ritual involving a virgin throwing a nine-sided dice. It was introduced to France by the Italians during the reign of King Charles VIII (r. 1483–98), and was known as Chemin de Fer . After it was introduced to England, it became known as European Baccarat.
