During the early to mid-20th century, Merton (1941) noted, “In no society is the selection of a marriage partner unregulated and indiscriminate” (p. 36). Baron (1972), examining marital trends 30 years later, also acknowledged that “all records show that in every society, historical or contemporary, primitive or modern, cultural restrictions are designed to limit the possible marriage partners available to any person” (p. 39). Yet, today, marriage patterns do not reflect these restrictions on our marriage choices.
