Women as leaders in international microfinance The face of poverty in the world today is female and young. According to the United Nations, women account for around 70% of the world's poor—those approximately 3 billion people in the world who live on less than the equivalent of US$2 a day. Unfortunately, due to the current financial and economic crisis, that number is increasing. The World Bank estimates that another 53 million people are likely to be trapped in extreme poverty as a result of this crisis. Women are among those who are most at risk. As recently noted by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang, the current crisis is expected to touch adversely and disproportionately the lives of poor women.
