Overview: Women in sports Before discussing the place of women in leadership positions in sport, it is first important to understand the basic history and elements of the sport industry. Although organized sport has been around since 776 B.C.E. and the commencement of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, the modern history of the industry really began in feudal England with the formation of jockey clubs to organize and monitor thoroughbred racing. The formation of the English Football Association for soccer in 1863, the establishment of the National League for professional baseball in the United States in 1876, and the rebirth of the Olympic Movement with the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894 were major milestones in the industry's modern history (Crosett & Hums, 2008).
